Three Fat Guys Review Jag’s Steak & Seafood – West Chester, Ohio

Lucas-GoodVinny-Good

Lucas

I’ll keep it this post short – I love Jag’s. I frequent Jag’s with my friends and family and I have been trying to talk the fat guys into joining me for months if not years. So when they finally agreed, I was very excited. We got some Camelot chicken (coconut crusted chicken served over a pinnapple with a pinnapple honey mustard sauce for dipping) and for my entree I got a filet with mashed potatoes and french fries. Yes, two starches. I really am a fat guy. I even finished my meal off like a true fatty with a gigantic piece of cheesecake. Yum.

The service and food were excellent, except for the fries. They are never great to be honest. Just “okay”. Everything about a dining experience at Jag’s is always wonderful. The valet parking, the atmosphere, the consistent service and quality of food. I really can’t say anything bad about Jag’s, except that it is obviously expensive.

The three fat guys visit to Jag’s was the most anticipated restaurant venture to date and was the longest in the making, we planned it almost a month in advance. With Lucas being a filet enthusiast, he convinced us that we could all save for a nice meal at Jag’s. And it sure did not disappoint.  Jag’s is a very upscale and fancy steakhouse.  The way the waitress treats you, the way your napkin is folded, the varying types of silverware and their exact placement, that dim, candlelit atmosphere, it all reeks of sophistication. We all went with the intention of having their filet and that’s exactly what everyone got. I also got mashed potatoes and french fries as my side. As an appetizer, we ordered the Camelot Chicken, which was crispy breaded chicken (like panko or something) that came on a skewer sticking out of a cross section of pineapple surrounded by a mote of an interestingly spiced honey mustard. It was absolutely delicious. I could have eaten 20 pieces of that chicken.

The filet was really good too, it had a tasty sauce drizzled over it. It was cooked just right, tender, a nice char and just enough pinkness. There were a few diced peppers added for a nice touch, although it seemed that only Lucas and I had peppers on our steak.  The mashed potatoes were also very delicious, creamy and flavorful. My only real complaint were the french fries. They were very deceiving. They looked good and crispy, but they were soft and soggy like. They had no real flavor and I only ate a few.

Apple CrispFor dessert, I ordered the apple crisp, which was also very tasty. It had a very appealing presentation, a scoop of ice cream over the apple crisp and all inside a really crispy pecan “bowl” which was called a tuile (I guess you learn new words at a fancy restaurant) and drizzled with caramel. I was so full by the end I couldn’t finish the dessert. As we were leaving, they even offered us a few boxes with chocolate covered strawberries to take home. This meal was extremely satisfying, except for the fries. The main problem I had, and I’m sure you can guess, was the cost. It was very expensive and something I can only justify having on a rare occasion.

Gordon Gets A Filet. What Else Would He Get?Finally we get to go to a place so nice  we can pretend to be real food critics. But wait, we never said we wanted to be real food critics. Because we’re not. We’re just three fat guys from Middletown!  And to proved it, I’m going to give you a short and honest fat guy from Middletown opinion of Jag’s Steak and Seafood. And here we go..

It’s a nice place! It’s quality food! It’s got great ambiance and great service! And like you would expect, you pay for it.

Like most of the guys I ordered the 5oz fillet. For my sides I had the onion straw and asparagus. The asparagus went untouched. I’m just not a fan. But I could have eaten a few pounds of that onion straw. I’m not fat for nothing!

The filet was exactly what you would expect from a fine restaurant. A good piece of meat prepared exactly as it should be. Though I prefer a steak with a little more flavor the demi glaze made up for that.

And yeah, that appetizer was delish! And I even had a bite of someone’s cheesecake and it was as good as it looked!

Bottom line for me, if you have the money, the special occasion, and are looking to keep it close to Middletown, Jag’s is definitely a place to consider.

Jags was always one of those steakhouses I thought I would never eat at, mainly due to price. However, due to a special lunch option Jags was doing (which was very rare) I got to experience one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had.

As an appetizer our table shared the Camelot Chicken. The chicken came breaded and skewered on a piece of fresh pineapple and was very good. The breading was lightly crunchy and the chicken was juicy. The portion size was a bit sparse for four fat guys but would do very well with a party of two or three.

My meal consisted of a 5oz fillet cooked medium with onion straws on top paired with crisp green beans and mashed potatoes. I’m not a huge fan of green beans but these were excellent. Mashed potatoes have always been my go-to vegetable ever since I was a kid. The ones with my meal were light and whipped very smooth and had a good texture and flavor. But let’s get to the main course (an the main reason for going to Jags in the first place) the steak.

I order my steak medium wherever I go and, sadly, it is never cooked the same. For me, medium steak has a warm, pink center that has the right amount of softness and texture. My steak at Jags was perfect. I will even be bold enough to say that it was probably the best steak I’ve ever had.

I finished off the meal with a triple layer chocolate mousse cake that came with fresh fruit and a nice little chocolate design on the plate. Like everything else, this was fantastic too.

Service was also exceptional. Our waitress never let our glasses get empty and finished dishes were quickly removed from the table. I always try to tip well because I’ve worked in food and I know how it can be but if any service deserved a good tip it was the kind we received at Jags.

Three Fat Guys Review LaRosa’s On National Beer Day

Lucas-NeutralVinny-NeutralGordon-Neutral

Lucas

lucas-larosas-foodI’m not a big pizza fan. Or a beer fan. However, I do like me hard ciders and whiskeys so I knew I could find something to celebrate “National Beer Day” if we went to LaRosa’s. The place was dead so we quickly sat at the bar; I asked if they had any ciders and was told no. The bartender then said “wait, I think we got in some new ciders.” He went off to see what they had and returned with an Angry Orchard. I was disappointed that this was their “new cider” but still took it.

For food I ordered a Three Meat Calzone. It was actually pretty good and packed with meat and cheese. Nothing I think I’d crave, but I’d certainly order it again.

Overall, it was a good quick lunch with nothing special. The bartender didn’t seem to like his job much and getting him to take my credit card for payment took FOREVER. So much so that I actually joked about walking out. But other than that, it was an average meal.

Vinny

It was national beer day and the three fat guys were set on getting a beer for lunch. We settled on the local LaRosa’s and decided that pizza and wings are always a good pairing with beer. We decided to sit at the bar for this occasion. LaRosa’s by no means has a great beer selection, they only have the standard light beers that you can get anywhere.  I ordered a tall Yeungling and me and Gordon decided to share a pepperoni pizza, because that is what us two fat guys love the most in this world. Just like their beer selection, their pizza is nothing to get excited about. Its average with a sauce that is more on the sweet side, but just spicey enough to balance the sweetness. Putting parmesan and crushed red peppers on it definitely takes it up a notch.

The bar tender was very unenthusiastic and did not bother to check on us much at all, once we got our food and drinks he was gone. After he brought us the check, it took forever for him to come pick it up, we probably waited 10 minutes. Im not crazy about LaRosa’s pizza, but its still good enough to enjoy with a beer and I was satisfied enough. If I had my choice though, I would have gotten pizza elsewhere.

Gordon

OK. I confess. I chose LaRosa’s because I knew it would be dead. #DontJudgeMe And I was correct. The entire bar area and the vast majority of the restaurant were empty. One possible explanation for that, Like Vinny mentioned earlier, is their beer selection sucks. Basically if you’re looking to drink something other than a grocery store beer such as Bud, Miller, Michelob etc, you’re not going to be happy. At least they have Yeungling on tap and Sam Adam’s Boston Lager in a bottle. So, it could be worse.

Though I do really like their wings.. I have to agree with Vinny that the pizza is just average. If you were lucky enough to have summer passes to King’s Island as a kid you might like LaRosa’s pizza a little more than you otherwise would. But in the end, it’s hard to taste memories.

So, to wrap this up a lot quicker than the bartender did anything that day, if all you’re looking for is a clean place with quality food and plenty of tables (except on a Sunday right after church) the LaRosa’s in Middletown is a good choice. But if I am taking my picky girlfriend out to eat.. I”m looking for something a little more.

Special Guest – Gareth

Your guest blogger Gareth is back! This time with another wing review! The restaurant? LaRosa’s Pizzeria. If you read my last guest post with the Fat Guys you’ll remember I named my self a wing-enthusiast so, naturally, I tried the wings at LaRosa’s. This time I opted for boneless wings and, once again, I went with the “Hot” sauce.

So how do LaRosa’s hot wings stack up against the ones from the Blue Goose Deuce? Well for starters these wings were actually hot. I like my hot wings to make me sweat a little bit and these definitely accomplished that. The sauce was (for me) a comfortable hot, meaning it had all the right heat without being unbearable. In addition to that, there was ample amounts of the hot sauce on the wings giving them a lot of flavor. The breading used on LaRosa’s wings is your standard boneless wing breading. Not too crunchy but not soft to the point where it’s mushy. As always I had to have a side of ranch for dipping. It’s hard to get ranch wrong but trust me, it’s happened. LaRosa’s ranch was pretty average. Nothing to boast about but nothing to complain about either.

One of the main reasons we went to LaRosa’s for lunch this day was the fact that it was National Beer Day and we figured LaRosa’s had beer on tap, which they did. However, their beer selection wasn’t the greatest. There were 6 taps consisting of Michelob Amber Bock, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Yuengling, Miller Lite and Blue Moon, none of which are my particular favorites as I tend to drink porters and stouts. There was an added selection of bottled beer which consisted of Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Yuengling, Yuengling Light, Corona Extra and Samuel Adams. Angry Orchard was also available. I opted for a tall Yuengling which was ok.

Overall my experience at LaRosa’s was good. Our wait time was non-existent (mainly because nobody else was even there), the food came out fast and the wings were a solid choice.

Three Fat Guys Review Blue Goose Deuce – Middletown, OH

Lucas-NeutralVinny-NeutralGordon-Neutralsmile

Lucas

The Blue Goose has been a name I’d heard of for years, but never been to. Over the last year or so I’ve seen a vehicle with Blue Goose Deuce driving around as well so I was happy we made the decision to go. Upon arrival I truly thought they were closed. The lot was vacant except for one car…. but still, the “Open” sign was illuminated so we went in. We were seated instantly and quickly got our drinks. We looked over the menu and after much debate placed our order. Service was good, as we were the only ones in the place for the majority of the time until a couple came in and sat at the bar. Our waiter was also the cook and bartender but he was attentive.

lucas-blue-goose (3)

I ordered a double cheeseburger and fries. The burger was gigantic. Definitely too much for one meal for me. The fries were very good, hand cut and deep fried like my momma used to make. No complaints from me, but like many other restaurants, nothing spectacular either. Average food, average pricing, average restaurant. Nothing wrong with that. But also nothing to stick in my memory really. I’d go back if invited, but not sure I’d ever suggest going there myself.

Vinny

When we arrived to the Blue Goose Deuce, we weren’t really sure if they were open due to there only being one vehicle in the parking lot. We were really considering going somewhere else, but the sign said ‘open’ so we went for it. It was a cozy little bar and grille. It had a 4 person bar, about 10 tables, a pool table, a dart board and 5 TVs. We were the only people in the place at the time we walked in. We were welcomed by our server and immediately got menus and our drinks. Their selection of food and alcohol seemed pretty good. I opted for the black and bleu burger, which said it had bleu cheese crumbles, and added bacon and instead of chips I got fries. The food came out pretty quickly, but then again we were the only people who had ordered anything.

BGDMy black and bleu burger was mediocre. When it arrived, the first thing I took note of was that there was no bacon (but it came out shortly after without me having to ask), the second was the fact that it was not blue cheese crumbles. It was like a bleu cheese dressing almost. It was mixed with pepper and almost resembled sausage gravy. My burger was drenched in it; I could not pick it up without getting it everywhere. Despite there being a lot of it though, it was pretty flavorless and I actually needed quite a bit of it to actually taste the bleu cheese. The bun was nice and toasted (but that didnt matter much since the bun became soggy from all the blue cheese). The fries were hand-cut and were pretty good.

Overall I thought the place was decent, cozy sports bar atmosphere, reasonable prices, good selection. I’m not sure how crowded the place gets and I can’t say what their service is like during a busy day, but our server was friendly and attentive. I wouldn’t get the black and bleu burger again but I would be willing to go back and try something else on their menu.

Gordon

O.K. I did it again. I ordered the chicken chunks. But before I get into that let me say how impressed I was with the decor of this place! If I worked a little closer this is definitely a place I would like to hang out at. Just super nice and clean.. with a nice mix of high tech and hardwood. As if that’s a thing. LOL

Now to the chicken chunks.. I really wasn’t that hungry. And after seeing the size of the burgers, I’m glad I didn’t go that route. So, I ordered the chicken.. again. It did catch my eye that the menu said these chunks were “pre-seasoned and so tasty they did not even need sauce”. Well that’s a bold claim so I had to try.  But I’m a skeptic so I ordered a side of buffalo sauce.

My chunks came out in the typical faux wooden bowl. They were steaming hot! The interesting thing about these chunks was surprisingly not their “pre-seasoned” tastiness, which I hardly even noticed, but their crunchiness. And by “crunch” I mean these chunks were so crunchy that I was afraid I was going to chip a tooth. Now don’t get me wrong, they were not burnt, neither was the meat dry or overdone. But the breading was crunchy as heck! Like I said.. it was interesting!

So, if you like that sort of thing I can highly recommend these chunks! But if you like flavor, be sure to order a side of your favorite sauce.

The Blue Goose Deuce takes up shop where the old Buffalo Wings and Rings restaurant stood before it caught fire. Traditional wings restaurants are few and far between in Middletown with only places like Applebee’s or pizza delivery services offering the food item.

With almost all the other popular dine-in restaurants located more towards Interstate 75 I feel like there isn’t a lot of traffic that is going that direction during dinner time. When myself and the other Fat Guys went in for lunch I was a little dismayed to see that we were the only customers in the place. Now granted we were there past normal lunch hours but still. The staff was minimal, consisting of a single server and a single cook. The single server, who appeared to be either the owner or a manager, was very polite and courteous and maintained a good rapport with us. However, with us being the only customers it was hard to get a sense of how service would be on a busier night.

The Blue Goose Deuce markets itself as a sports bar and wings joint. Looking at the menu there was a nice variety of different burgers, sandwhiches, wings and chicken items as well as sides and appetizers. There were 4 or 5 beer taps along with bottled beers and even a nice liquor variety that consisted of both bottom and top shelf items. There are also daily specials that might be of interest to some people. My biggest complaint with the menu is that it seemed a little unprofessional in the sense that it called its sandwhiches “sammiches”. This is a minor complaint but I personally felt like I was reading off the kids menu when I saw that.

Blue Goose Deuce Wings and Fries (1)As far as food goes I opted for traditional wings. I got an order of 10 wings with a side of fries and asked that my wings be spun in their “hot” sauce (as it was labeled on the menu).  The heat scale for the wings ranged from mild all the way to “XXX” and there were also extra flavorings, like garlic, that you could add as well. I opted for the standard hot wings, which in my opinion is the classic buffalo wing. The wings themselves were actually pretty good. The meat was tender and juicy and the breading had a nice balance, it wasn’t too thick but still thick enough to notice.

The heat of my hot wings, however, left something to be desired. In comparison to other wing joints, the Hot option at the Blue Goose Deuce felt more like a medium or a mild. There was a slight heat to the sauce but nothing near what I would consider “hot”. I breezed through these wings with no problem. The fries were probably the highlight of the meal. The Blue Goose Deuce offers fries that are thinner than most places but they have this hand-cut flavor that is really nice. I didn’t try any seasonings or toppings to the fries (which were available) but in my opinion they don’t need them.

As a lunch spot the Blue Goose Deuce is ok. It’s a little weird sitting in a restaurant where you are the only customers. I’d be interested in going in during the evening, especially on nights where they have some of their specials (Monday night is wing night). If you’re looking for a decent wing joint in or around Middletown then the Blue Goose Deuce is definitely a place worth trying. The wings were good but I’m curious as to how hot the sauces actually are. This place is definitely more of a casual dining experience and I would say that my overall experience was decent. I’m not sure I would go back for lunch but for a quick bite to eat and a beer on a weeknight the Blue Goose Deuce seems like a good spot.

Three Fat Guys Review The Spinning Fork – Middletown

Lucas-GoodVinny-GoodGordon-Good

Lucas

spinning-fork-lucas-foodThe Spinning Fork has been on the Fat Guy’s list of restaurant’s we’d like to visit for quite awhile, so I was excited when Gordon decided we should eat there. I’ve been there a few times over the last few years but only for dinner. The place was pretty empty at lunch with only 7-8 guest there when we arrived. Our waitress was quick to come to us and get our drink order… though that experience was a little than an optimal for Vinny (see below). I ordered a cherry Dr. Pepper and after the drinks arrived we ordered. I ordered their lunch special which was a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich with Alfredo Sauce instead of tomato sauce and red onions and potato chips. I ordered mine without the onions.

Unfortunately, my first sandwich came out with onions on it despite me and Vinny ordering the same thing and his coming out correctly. The waitress was quick to take the sandwich back, but it still took 8-9 minutes to get my replacement by which time Gordon and Vinny were well through their meals.

The sandwich was quite delicious though, the bread we crispy and well flavored with a garlic butter, and the chicken was crispy and well breaded. I could have used a bit more Alfredo sauce, but it was still good. The chips were standard store-bought chips, they tasted like Lay’s. I’d have like to seen a house chip made there but I love Lay’s chips so I’m not complaining.

The whole meal cost $7.95, plus $2 for my drink. A little higher than Wendy’s but definitely worth it. I would recommend it.

Vinny

The Spinning Fork was a nice little Italian restaurant. I’ve been past the one in Fairfield many times but have never eaten there. The place has a nice bar right in the middle and some racks of wine to add to the Italian atmosphere. There weren’t very many guests at the time, so service was pretty quick. Our waitress asked us what we would like to drink, so I looked at the back of the menu to see what they had. I found root beer on the list, so I asked for a root beer. The waitress kind of grimaced and said that they did not serve root beer anymore and that I could have literally asked for anything on there except that. So I took another look at the menu and saw lemonade, so I asked for a lemonade. She then says that they are out of lemonade, they still served it, but they were just out. So I finally just settled for a water. Things weren’t off to a great start.

SpinningForkShe brought the drinks and I ordered the daily special which was a chicken parmesan sandwich with alfredo sauce and it came with some chips. Shortly after, our waitress brought us Gordon’s salad and some bread sticks. I thought the bread sticks were decent with a little butter. Gordon however made it pretty clear he thought they were dusted with grill scrapings. When the food was brought out we noticed Lucas’s sandwich had onions on it, which was sort of surprising because mine didn’t and we order the same thing. When his food was redelivered it looked like it had been painted with butter, you can probably see the sheen in his picture. However, mine was not which was another oddity considering we ordered the same exact thing. Either way, the sandwich was pretty delicious. It was a little dry and did not have much alfredo sauce so I asked for some extra. The alfredo sauce was actually pretty bland and didn’t seem to add much flavor to the sandwich, but the chicken, parmesan and toasted bun made up for it. The chips were standard store bought, nothing special there.

Overall, the taste was pretty good, the atmosphere was enjoyable, the staff friendly and attentive enough. The price was decent and I would go there again to see if I can find some other tasty food.

Gordon

Like Lucas mentioned with the group, the Spinning Fork had been on my personal radar for some time as well. I’ve heard several  friends mention it and for a while it was the new thing in Middletown that almost everyone, or so  it seemed, was talking about. But I’m a procrastinator.

My procrastination however came to an end last week when I stopped into the Spinning Fork for lunch with Lucas and Vinny.

As you may have picked up on, if you’ve read any of my past comments, the first thing I notice when walking into a new restaurant  is the atmosphere. Partly because I know I can’t take my girl friend to a place without a nice atmosphere, and partly because it matters a little bit to me too. So.. I was once again pleasantry surprised from the moment we walked in. Perhaps it’s decades of memories of what most restaurants in Middletown have tended to look like that make me glad to see something so much nicer, but in fairness the Spinning Fork would look nice just about anywhere.

In the spirit of full disclosure I should mention I’m not a big fan of Italian food.  But that has however made me a pretty good judge of lasagna. As that’s all I ever order when push comes to pasta.

I was glad to see the lasagna came with a salad and bread sticks. That’s something I really did not expect given the price.

To get down to “business” here: The salad was pretty good. The bread sticks made me wonder if this what licking my back yard BBQ grill would taste like. And the lasagna, served in a giant portion, wasn’t  bad. I’m thinking the massive amount of a rather tasteless sauce that was heaped on top was holding it back.

That being said, the service was amazing! The atmosphere was nice.. and for the price I think it was a great lunch! I’ll gladly go again.

Three Fat Guys Review Main Street Social – Monroe, Ohio

Lucas-GoodVinny-GoodGordon Good

Lucas

lucas-mainstreet-social-foodI had no idea what to expect from Main Street Social as I had never been to the Red Onion (previously located there) and always thought the Red Onion sounded like a “snooty” and “uppity” type of place. Upon arriving I was very underwhelmed by the building and hoped that the interior of the restaurant did not match the exterior. Lucky for me: it didn’t. The inside was very nice and obviously new and well maintained. We were greeted when we walked in and told to sit where ever we wanted. We took a seat near the windows and looked over the menu. Our drink order was taken quickly (a cherry coke for me and waters for my wannabe skinny fat friends) and delivered equally as fast. I was also given a refill between placing my food order and when the food came. Our waiter checked on us several times during the 30-40 minutes we were there and I definitely thought the service was top-notch for a small restaurant at lunch time.

Now, onto the food. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger plain (that’s just bacon, cheese, and meat for those who question what exactly “plain” means to me), and their waffle fries. The food all arrived hot and fresh and the burger was actually two thin patties of beef, with plenty of cheese and some bacon. The picture doesn’t do the bacon justice as it looks flabby, but it was really very crispy and good. The fries had an herb seasoning and were very crispy and yummy as well. The bun on the sandwich was nicely toasted and had good flavor. I ate every bite and was full and happy.

Fries and sandwich and a drink = $13.25. That’s a little pricey for a quick lunch for me, but the quality was good and so was the service. I’d definitely go back, but not sure I could make it a regular thing just because the of the cost.

Vinny
MSSMain Street Social was a cozy little restaurant in Monroe. The sign outside was fairly small so you may not notice it right away. My first impression was that it was a pretty nice looking place, I heard it had been remodeled before opening (this place used to be The Red Onion). It was pretty small, only about 8 booths and a 10 seat bar. So it looks like it can only seat about 35-40 people. It looked like there were only 2 servers working at the time, but since it wasn’t crowded that was no problem. They were sort of tag teaming the tables. They were friendly and seemed very laid back. I ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger with no onions. This burger was delicious. It was two patties that were tender and juicy with a slice of cheddar in between. The BBQ was not super sweet but more tangy. The bacon was nice and crispy and the bun was well toasted. Just an overall good burger! The service was speedy and we were out of there in 30 minutes. Lucas let me try some of his herb buttered waffle fries and they were also delicious. Nice and crispy and good flavor, it tasted like they put like garlic salt and maybe even a little bit of cheese (parmesan?). I would definitely recommend this place. My only gripe would be that the pricing is a little high, but the service and taste were good!

Gordon

You know, every now and then I want to sit down for lunch, have a water in a fancy glass, a quality sandwich, listen to some good music, and count my blessings that I’m not as fat as Vinny or Lucas. And today, Main Street Social in downtown Monroe, filled that order perfectly!

As I have a thing against spending several dollars for a glass of pop, and I’ve been trying to cut back on calories, I ordered a glass of water. But from the moment the waiter brought out my glass of water in a nice glass and sat it on a Great Lakes coaster.. I was impressed! Then there was the excellent service and great music. And I was even more impressed!

As you might be able to tell from the picture, I ordered a tasty Turkey Club! And though I did not order any for myself, Lucas let me try a few of his waffle cut fries, and they were amazing too!

But back to the sandwich.. it was perfect! The bread was crispy, the Turkey was tender, the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo were all spot on as well. My only complaint was I could have eaten another one. I’m working on that complaint, but yeah, that one’s on me.

So, to wrap this lunch up, I thought the atmosphere, service, and food were top notch. And since it looks like they have a nice selection of craft beer, I’d really like to go back after work!
